Sketch- vs Carnotaurus

Description

Now you know why I don't draw dinosaurs...I'm so bad with them :iconemmplz:
H-hey, really! I aim to do paleoart in future if I'll get an ocassion, so I AM SERIOUS, SORRY!

Most of people had love to dinosaurs and have nostalgia from the childhood thanks to "Land before time".
I, believe me, haven't get ovassion to know these series untill I've grown up and heard about it from people in the internet!
I just got once for my B-day casette with two films and that's all...However, I think even if I would know them,
I still would have my nostalgia at Disney's Dinosaur. Why? Well, I always been interested in details, in recostructing
prehistric life, I've got mesmerazed by John Sibbick drawings when I was small...

...and still I am. These details, well-build situations when you ALWAYS find more and more when diggin'
into the big picture! I won't lie, I am kind of freak. I was re-watching Dinosaur movie over milion times,
to admire all those breathtaking details...and hear one of the greatest music tracks ever!

Not to mention, this movie has two of my most favourite dinosaurs: Brachiosaurus and Carnotaurus.
This movie made HUGE impact on me- you might never notice this, but I tend to do Aladar's eyebrows for example
on my Avalugg take.

I like that they balance between realism and characterization of dinosaurs-more or less.
Even Carnotaurus has its own mimic, but...I feel they haven't used it at THIS moment.

Only by rewatching or watching in slow motion you will notice Carnotaurus astonished "face" at first moment
of defending. I wanted to show it in my way how it shall be.

Also, a quick sketch, even tho it took me over 30 minutes :iconorzplz: ehh, at last I can come back fresh
to ref sheet I'm doing.

Training by doing, observation, training by doing and obserwation- these are the "secret" of such improvement of mine.

An artwork commentary
What I've done to make the Carnotaurus "better"?
No, it's not its whole pose- that's the challenge of "capturing" the situation in one shot, in one drawing.

In my opinion, Carnotaurus would just move up its mouth more and moreover, since the light was coming from its back,
movie creators should make use of it! A shadow coming from it's horn should cover an area around eye,
maing stronger contrast AND imitate in our perception an eyebrow- adding head and neck moved back,
all would make easily recognizable expression....pardon if I'll sound unprofessional here, an expression like
"what the hell...?!"

If you're reading till this point AND you're interested what makes some artists/drawing amateurs improve fast
or do quickly great things...well, drawing needs a lot of thinking, observing and some basic knowledge
for some tips.

For example, why I made it so messy with lines?
It's because they're more aggressive and add more dramatic, intense feel. They can even add a bit of dynamics.
When you start with shading, try to focus on most important areas first to build the structure.

Also, contrast. It's one of the most important things, since the more easily recognisable and separate parts,
the more eyecatching and interesting to the eye is picture.

Maybe that's why mayority of people love dat hell cell-shading...I dunno. I am weird being in minority
that doesn't like it...with exceptions of course.

Composition tips from me: as you can see, I freakin' love to have fun on it!

Styracosaurus sharp horns/spikes takes attention at Carnotaurus head and Aladar's. The canyon as when I looked
at video clip is also edited in a way to bring attention
at defending dinosaurs as well as build a bit of perspective.

There are some talented people who always make a backround, but I'm NOT one of them. I just self dyscypline myself
to add the background as often as I can. It can be even abstract, with random circles or lines, but if you ever
wonder what's the "secret" of those great drawings...now you know there's no such magic behind it :D

btw, I spended way more time at this to brace myself when I'll be doing frame-by-frame animations to my comic...yeeep.
I must know how quickly use shaded areas with mix of important lines AND easily recognizable expressions/poses
through all actions that happen fast. Yes I take it overly serious, because I am stupid and don't do cartoons,
but semi-realism with high amount of details.

Ohh and another nice thing to remember: like we step away and look at our drawing when doing traditional
and big drawing (mostly 100x70 cm on drawing lesson), I save picture from time to time to check the whole view.
Aaand look at the thumbnail of your drawing- why it can be important? Because how they appear in message box?
yeah. This skecth looks horrible in full view, but it's cool as thumbnail at last :dummy:

Thaks for reading, hope you've got something helpful :aww:
